Getting about

Introduction

There are many ways to get around Sydney, including Bus, Train, Ferry or Light rail ( AKA trams ).

The public transport system in Sydney is really good, except at peak time when things can be squishy, but all things considered the city copes well.

Hints and tips

MyMulti3 - The best way of getting about

If you are staying in Sydney for 2 or more days then definatly invest in a "MyMulti3" ticket

This ticket gives you unlimited access to the government transport system (except the airport train station as that is privately owned - but you can use the ticket to get to the airport stations and then purchase a gatepass)

As a tourist this is essential for easy movement around this great city and is awesome value for money. Proof: If you go 1 train stop from Central to Town hall it costs $3.80 (single not return)

At the time of writing this web page, the cost of a weekly MyMulti3 pass was $63, which works out $9 a day - for unlimited travel!

Make sure you check the http://www.SydneyTrains.info/tickets/which/mymulti website for updates to this inforamtion.

MyMulti3 IMPORTANT UPDATE

From 1st September 2014 - certain MyMulti tickets will not be sold as they have been swapped to "Opal" cards

Important links you should read are:

At the time of this article update, the 7 day unlimited ticket was still available as a paper ticket (as per link above)

At the time of this article update, the montly, quarterly, and yearly ticket will NOT be available and must be purchased on an Opal card

Which transport is best to get from one end of Sydney CBD to another?

Peak hour: Train

Off peak: Bus

But do not stick to just trains or buses, with a MyMulti3 ticket for example, you could use the Bus to go to Circular Quay, then a Ferry to Milson point (AKA Luna Park wharf), walk up the hill, and train back to the city!

Planning a trip?

If you want to plan a trip yourself do NOT go to the individual transport websites

Use the http://www.TransportNSW.info/ website and that will outline the entire trip for you!

Train

The train system in Sydney is very easy to understand

Map of the Sydney Train network

(personally I do not like the map on the link above, I prefer the older and slightly out of date map of the network)

There are 2 important things to remember when using the trains in Sydney - if you remember these - you cannot go wrong.

  • The city circle
  • Central station

City Circle

80% of the City CBD can be accessed from the City Circle and the trains go in both directions from Central

The stations on the City Circle are:

  • Central
  • Town Hall
  • Wynyard
  • Circular Quay
  • St James
  • Muesum

Central station

ALL TRAINS to nearly every location leave from Central station. End of Story.

So if you get lost, make your way to Central station and you should be fine.

Buses

The secret to using buses in the CBD is this: always stay on George street and you will get a bus every few minutes up and down town.

Sometimes its is better to use the bus to go to parts of the city where other transports cannot.

Most buses accept cash to purchase bus tickets, but some buses do not accept cash and tickets have to be purchased before hand - this is only if you do not have a MyMulti3 ticket

The free bus in Sydney

There is a free bus that goes from Central down to Circular Quay and loops back

I recommend NOT using the free bus, it is a crowded and old bus with no-airconditioning - if you have a MyMulti3 ticket, use another bus

Ferries

Sydney Ferries are a great way to relax and get from point to point via water, and can be much faster then other transports to certain destinations

They even have free wi-fi internet access on board!

As a rule the harbour is very calm, and you should not get sea sick, unless the weather is really bad.

Light rail

The Light rail is primarily used to gain access to China town and Darling Harbour from Central station.

Streets

The streets of Sydney are an exploration on their very own, full of history, if you know where to look

Exploration by foot is the best way to really experience Sydney.
